My Cupping scores for Guatemala Cup of Excellence Coffee Competition. I am obsessive, and keep my scores in spreadheet form as we cup the lots. It also gives me something to do during discussion, since I feel somewhat awkward at times, Anyway ...There were few lots entered compared to other CoE competitions due to several factors. The auction was announced late- farmers did not have time to prepare. The auction was not as "open" as it should be. Entrants had to be members of Anacafe, which costs. I am sure Anacafe would work round this so small farmers could participate (as they do in other countries) but THEY need to reach out to the farms, create a publicity campaign to get samples submitted. Larger farms can best afford to participate: the sample has to come from a lot of coffee that is withheld, not sold, pending earlyu round results. A small farm can't just set aside 15 bags and not get paid for it. The internal market price for coffee cherry was very high in Guatemala, Hence there was little incentive to hold back coffee and not get paid for it, pending auction results.
